Sports provision at Berry Hill Primary School

Here at Berry Hill Primary School we pride ourselves on our excellent sporting and  physical activity  provision, which resulted in the SILVER GAMES MARK 2016-17 and the GOLD  for 2017-18 and 2018-2019.
We aim for all our children to develop a love of exercise and promote a wide range of options so that all children get a chance to participate and enjoy!  Children understand that physical exercise promotes a positive outlook, and helps them stay healthy in body and mind!
This ethos has seen us be awarded with the 2017-18 Gloucestershire Active Sports Award for Wellbeing (in Collaboration with GHLL).  We are extremely proud of this achievement.
Through our sports provision, we instill team skills and self-confidence into the children to enable them to take on challenges inside and outside of their learning. From regular PE sessions, to swimming and extra curricular activities, sports really is at the heart of our school.  In 2018 we were proud to achieve Sainsbury's Silver School Games Award, and the Gold Sports Mark in both 2017-18 and 2018-2019.  These awards are validation of the excellent provision here for all our pupils whatever their interests of abilities., and a continuing commitment to driving further improvements to be the best we can be.
Through our excellent local sports network our children are offered many opportunities to compete with other schools in the area.  Sports have included netball, athletics, hockey, rounders, cricket, mountain biking and many more. These experiences give children the chance to compete, building their social and moral skills outside of their 'safe' school environment.
We also take part in the annual Country Dance Festival which celebrates the true culture and tradition of our local area.
Whilst coaching our children to reach their full potential, we ensure that the core British Values are also instilled into the children to give them a good understanding of fair play and good team manners. This includes assemblies and workshops with elite athletes, and focusing on the values of sport such as Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship, Courage, Determination.
Whilst we take part to win, we also passionately believe in the importance of participation, fair play, and learning to lose with grace.  Comments such as 'its not about winning', 'just do your best' and 'lets make Berry Hill proud' are regular comments that can be heard when taking our pupils to external competitions which evidently is part of our ethos here.
