Wellbeing and Positive Mental Health
Here at Berry Hill we believe passionately in the value of children learning how to support positive mental health. We want them to understand that times can be challenging in all our lives, but that we can do something about it! Our proactive approach has led to us achieving our Mental Health Champions Award, of which we are very proud!
Support for wellbeing and positive mental health education is woven throughout our provision - through the Curriculum, in assemblies, special events (such as World Mental Health Day), and we also hold workshops for families. Below are just some of the ways that we help our children to understand more about wellbeing and mental health.
5 WAYS TO WELLBEING:
This excellent initiative is used as a framework to help children understand that there are ways they can help themselves live a happy and healthy life.
The '5 Ways to Wellbeing' are a framework used during assemblies, at playtimes and in classrooms to help children identify ways that they can stay healthy and happy in body and in mind. The 5 ways are:
- Take Notice
- Be Active
- Keep Learning
TRAILBLAZERS: Positive Mental Health in Schools through NHS support
We are delighted that our school has been given the opportunity to take part in a new, national programme to help make mental health support for children and young people more available when they need it.
We are one of 72 schools from Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Forest of Dean to work with the NHS in Gloucestershire to introduce Mental Health Support Teams into schools. Valuable support is being provided to identified pupils to help them with the ups and downs of life, with issues such as anxiety, friendship, exam stress and challenging behaviour. This may involve group work and/or individual, one-to-one support, either at school or elsewhere. Where appropriate, the Mental Health Support Team will also link up with the specialist mental health services in Gloucestershire. They will also support parents and teachers to help children and young people who are experiencing difficulties.

Nurture Group has been running successfully at Berry Hill Primary School for a number of years now. We are very proud of what our Nurture Group contributes to the well-being of our pupils.
The Nurture Group provides opportunities to develop confidence, self esteem and social skills, in a secure, caring and safe environment. The group consists of children with a wide range of needs who are not, for whatever reason, achieving their full potential. The group has high expectations with clearly defined boundaries, positive reinforcement, consistency, structure and predictability. It works within the principles of inclusive practice and the principles of the Nurture Group Network to respond to diverse needs.
The Principles of Nurture are:
- Children’s learning is understood developmentally
- The classroom offers a safe base
- The importance of nurture for the development of self esteem
- Language is a vital means of communication
- All behaviour is communication
- The importance of transition in children’s lives
