Class Pine 2020-2021: YEAR 5

Welcome to Pine Class
We hope you have had a lovely Easter break.
We are really looking forward to this year and supporting your child on their learning journey. We aim to develop their independence as well as their love for learning.
Below you can find our Spring 2 and Summer 1 topic web 'European seaside and tourism' where we will be focusing on the how seaside holidays have changed.
This half term, PE will be on Wednesdays and Fridays. Library will be on alternate Fridays. Please ensure that your child has the required equipment in school.

We focused on some of the 'five ways to wellbeing'.
Take Notice and Be Active
Mindfulness Rainbow Walk - We went for a walk in the junior playground to see how many different colours we could notice before completing our rainbow.
Articulate game - The children described something without saying the word for their partner to guess.
Thursday 15th October 2020 - Maths
Partner/small group times table matching game.
As part of our topic, we made a model of the River Nile using cardboard and papier mache (newspaper and PVA glue) in small groups.
Wednesday 11th November 2020 - Remembrance
For Remembrance, Pine Class watched the two minute silence on BBC. They wrote poetry about key points during World War II focusing on figurative language and the senses.
Thursday 12th November 2020 - History/Geography (local area)
We used old and new maps to discuss the change in land use locally over time, focusing on the five main uses (agricultural, commercial, residential, recreational, transportation).
Thursday 26th November 2020 - STEM workshop
We used team work and problem solving skills to design and create an effective fairground ride for their chosen audience. We used coding skills to create algorithms for the motors, lights and music that formed an integral part of their overall design. We used logical thinking and debugging skills to solve design and coding problems.

Today, we had a very special visit from Father Christmas who very kindly dropped off some presents for us.
Tuesday 9th March 2021 - Design technology
Today, we made healthy Greek salad and pizza (including the base) using a range of techniques: mixing, spreading, kneading and baking.
We used self-raising flour, butter, egg and milk to create a scone base then added some toppings of our choice. 
Wednesday 17th March 2021 - Active Discovery Club
Challenge explorer: Explore new activities and challenge your skills for this badge.
Group 1 - Find the longest stick, shortest stick, biggest leaf, smallest leaf, biggest stone and smallest stone.
Group 2 - Texture finder - how many can you find? rough, smooth, spikey, bumpy, slippy, grippy
Group 3 - Create a target, see how many times you can hit with different techniques in 30 seconds, try to beat your score.
Tuesday 23rd March 2021 - Geography (Topic)
How have seaside holidays changed?
1950s holiday hunt - using sources to answer questions.
Reverend Tony gave us some Easter crosses to decorate for a display in the Church.
